Game #2 of the best of three started with the WBS Knights jumping out to 2-0 lead over the Jr Royals. The Royals fought back and tied the score and with a minute left in the game the Knights were up by one goal.
Like Yogi Berra said “Déjà Vu all over again” the Royals scored to send the game into overtime. Less than a minute into the second overtime period in two games Brian Whelan put a wrist shot into the back of the net and won the game, series, and the Foster Cup.
The Royals are the first and last NA3AHL Champions and the last Foster Cup winners as the teams within the league move on next year to the EHL (Eastern Hockey League) Elite division.
The Jr Royals finished the season with a 37-2-0 record with 274 goals score and 101 scored against.
A portion of the teams success was Royals net minder John Krause who stepped into the starting role after Brandon Perrone was called up to the NAHL Titans. Krause had a spectacular effort in the two playoff series with over a .925 save percentage making several stops that could have changed the games.
A great group of boys led by dedicated coaches celebrated the victory as it would be the last game they played together as a Junior Royals team.
Next season the Long Island Jr Royals will join forces with the New York Bobcats in the Eastern Hockey League Premier Division. Look out EHL, the Bobcat/Royals are coming.
